I do have the SuSE default X login installed on one of my SuSE boxes, so if there is a X based irc client that would be easier for a newbie I can definitely give it a try.

Dunno if it's part of the default X install (I doubt it) but XChat is certainly on the CDs. It'll be version 1.8.x in 8.0, version 2.0.0 for 8.1 is available at www.usr-local-bin.org, but that won't work with your 8.0 install.
