if you are using svgalib quake its more than likely a problem with having control over the console (alot of svgalib apps are like this), instead of it being somethign to do with the audio, if svgalib quake encounteres a problem with audio on startup, it simply disables audio output.. Have you tried it as root or a regular user? just wondering... On my machine quake segfaults if run as a normal user even though everybody can write to /dev/dsp.
