What do the following error messages in the error log mean?
Sep 8 12:17:51 james kernel: printer.c: usblp0: error -110 reading printer status Sep 8 12:18:03 james kernel: usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
This indicate USB problems - i.e. problems regarding the plain data transfer via USB - this has nothing to do with printer drivers.
Kyocera FS-1010 connected via an USB Port
Try the parallel port (I guess this printer has one). See the manual and http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2002/04/jsmeix_print-device-parallel.html how to set up a parallel port if is doesn't work out-of-the-box.
