I just tried without the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and rebooted. It works the same. It doesn't seem to need that file anymore.
It isn't supposed to "need" it any more, but not having one often doesn't work or doesn't work well with older hardware. The same isn't good if you can't use your modern display's native 1440x900 mode because of its attachment to a 10 year old video card. Try removing the old TNT card and trying on the onboard video port without using any xorg.conf. If you can't get 1440x900 that way, try the xorg.conf file I gave you a link to last night, but only after uncommenting 2-3 lines that include the string "1440x900". Start with the modes line of your choice of color depth in 'Section "Screen"', and the 'Option "PreferredMode" "1440x900"' line in 'Section "Monitor"'. If that works but the font and other sizes don't seem right, you can uncomment one of the 1440x900 lines that begin with '#DisplaySize' to make everything bigger (higher DPI) or smaller (lower DPI). -- " We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion."
