Michael, This is only vaguely related to the above comment, but I'd like to configure "root" for the settings in profile, and I'm not entirely sure how to accomplish this. (BTW, I use bash exclusively.) Specifically, I'd like to be able to use the command-line aliases that S.u.S.E. engineers have conveniently placed in profile when I'm logged in as superuser.
