I feel your pain Fred. Time to get a cold one outta the fridge.
It's a REAL BUMMER when you get new hardware and need sound because MOST on board chipsets AREN'T supported nor are PCI cards. It's an area that is VERY much lacking in Linux. At this point, I have no idea what to do......I've a card, a discontinued card no less, which IS on the list in Yast, but from articles I've read, isn't supported and I certainly can't get it to work.
Yeah, that really does suck. I'm a bit surprised you're having trouble with modern audio chips. I've installed Linux on everything from 386s to dual Opteron servers and the only sound cards I've ever had trouble with were ISA cards that required PnP. You might want to try MSI motherboards. I'll have to pay more attention to which chips work so I can give more specific advice in the future. Now I think I'll join Jake and have a frosty one myself. Jeff
