I noticed that SuSE have posted a 2.2.3 kernel tarball on their website. As there don't seem to be any instructions perhaps someone can help me out...
1. is this kernel any different from the "standard" 2.2.3 kernel? In other words, does SuSE modify the kernel for use on their OS?
2. the SuSE 6.0 box says that it is 2.2 ready but shipped with 2.0.36. Is this really true or are there other packages that still need to be upgraded to run the 2.2.3 kernel? If so, is there a list somewhere?
3. Redhat has posted an upgrade HowTo (with dire warnings about upgrading). Is there some similar howto or instructions available for SuSE?
The 2.2.3 kernel runs properly on the standard suse6 distribution. There is a difference in the setup for compiling a kernel on suse6, depending on whether you want a 2.0* kernel or a 2.2* kernel. The 2.036 kernel needs to be compiled with the older gcc version; whereas the 2.2* kernel is best compiled with egcs. Under suse6, there is a package called "gcc front". If you install it, you can compile the 2.0.36 kernel; if you don't install it, you have egcs as your compiler, which can effectively compilr the 2.2.* series kernels. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
