Hmm, why not get root's environment? I'd do it like this:
su - <enter root password> sh ~steve/Desktop/ati-driver-installer-8.32.5-x86.x86_64.run

thanks guys. Ive been use to nvidia drivers I guess.... the .run drivers that they distribute are already executable. Im all set. steve
