Norman,
It may indeed be that simple or even simpler. On my Compaq/HP laptop I have the acpid package installed but not (as far as I know) in use. Instead I blindly followed my colleage Will Helton's advice ...
Go in and edit /etc/init.d/boot.local with the following two lines:
modprobe ac modprobe battery
Save and close then reboot machine. Works for me.
I have a Toshiba Satellite 1135-S155. ACPI is partially functional on it, after following all the detailed directions as per earlier in this thread (I did this two months ago when I bought the laptop, and have been hoping for updated directions/functionality). The above modprobes are there. The runlevel editor is set up. What I get is a battery indicator that DOES show charge/nocharge. The graphical indicator declines when not plugged in, and beeps happen as a warning for immenent shutdown. BUT the battery indicator ALWAYS shows zero minutes left no matter if charging or not charging. And when I unplug the charger, the graphical indicator correctly changes state to show unplugged, and it shows "draining" graphically. Looking at the battery info I see: linux:/proc/acpi/battery/BAT1 # more state present: yes capacity state: ok charging state: discharging present rate: 0 mA remaining capacity: 3760 mAh present voltage: 14800 mV And the present rate seems clearly bogus. The battery seems to be correctly id'ed: linux:/proc/acpi/battery/BAT1 # more info present: yes design capacity: 4000 mAh last full capacity: 4000 mAh battery technology: rechargeable design voltage: 14800 mV design capacity warning: 420 mAh design capacity low: 156 mAh capacity granularity 1: 264 mAh capacity granularity 2: 3780 mAh model number: PA3251U serial number: 3658Q battery type: Li-Ion OEM info: TOSHIBA The contents of "alarm" is "unsupported". Any clues?
Damian
Oh dear! I was beginning to think it was something as complicated as that. AFter a bit of searching, it is found and installed.
I don't have time to play with it now but will try in the next few days, .... and let you know.
