oh one other thing then if it's a bug is that if i quickly expand the window size glxgears runs for a few seconds but the gears breakup into their componant polygons, triangles etc. and I guess i'd better be honest about this too before i noticed this but after i upgraded to 9.0 i had to rearrange my pci cards as i stopped using the onboard sound and started using an ens1371 and I had a pig of a time getting the combination of pci nic,pci sound and pci video working together without conflicts. although everything seems fine except this wierdness with the ati card.
thanks for your help

Okay, the freeze part is probably a bug then (I thought the problem was just that glxgears was too slow). glheretic-1.2 has a bug which will cause it to hang my X server also if I do certain things (I have a fairly good idea where the bug is, but since sdlheretic is fast enough on my machine I have not been tempted to hunt it down (I have to push the reset button to get my display usable again -- makes for slow unpleasant debugging, let me tell you:-))
