got my new vostro 1710 with an xp factory install. I shrunk the xp partition with the 10.3 suse disk, then i installed 11.1. Selected kde 3.5, killed the dog before the initial install, added kernel source && syms && gcc for vmware and possible video card compiles, put grub in the mbr and all went very smooth. Yes, i did get a black eye with wireless, but a step by step procedure is availabe on the net for ndiswrapper, but everything else worked from the very start. and the original xp is still there, as functional as it could ever be, only a keystroke away when in grub, which works just fine. not bad for a not officially supported model. and 11.1-x64 seems to be at least just as good as my trusty 10.3, this is the first time that i am trusting it with real work:) now i have a question: is it possible to hide the grub menu from the screen and set up a keyboard selection of a non-default boot selection? can it be replaced with a splash screen of some sort or even just a blinking "-" at the top of the screen? it would be "kool" in front of "non-believers", no? btw, hiding the menu also implies that the "loading grub..." and stages count down is also hidden, only an error message should be visible, i think i am looking for something more than the hiddenmenu command. d. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
