Will check what you stated at my next new install because I do not do what you are doing namely, trying to configure the printer during the actual installation process.
From past experience, I configure the SOUND and the PRINTER *after* the system is installed when I use YaST to do the configuring. And using YaST I find that the driver for my HP printer is shown and I am 'asked' if I want to change it - which I believe I do by selecting hplib.
The above is my recollection but I will double check this the next time I install.

I was surprised to see the printer config during install, but there is no reason it shouldn't be there. The 'Connection Wizard' worked flawlessly, finding the remote Laserjet via ipp. After the hplip mess, the printer confirmation/print test page also worked flawlessly and my test page: Laserjet4:YaST2testprint@alchemy.3111skyline.com printed perfectly. The only thing printer install fails to do that it should do is install */etc/papersize* with the papersize contained as a single-line (e.g.: letter, A4,..). Whether during install/post-install, it was just nice to have a printer config that worked and didn't require hacking cups.conf :) -- David C.
