Nobody really explicitly mentioned that 'locate' *is* using a file database, or index, if you will, normally created once a day. So, in the cases when a user is looking for recently created files, 'locate' will be of no use.

You can use locate. It is part of the findutils-locate package on the SuSE CDs. You will have to run a periodic updatedb command as root (which takes a little while) but the locate will then work with any user and is quite fast.
Well, if he has a lot of time then he can just wait since cron runs updatedb automatically (daily by default).
