When I was using a 56K modem my ftp download would peak at about 4KBytes/Sec. Now that I am using ADSL, 384KBits/sec - tier 1, I can peak at about 40KBytes/sec during an ftp download, or about 80% efficiency. You have a pretty HOT 56K modem!
It might've been 3.5k/sec on a 56k modem. It's been a long time since I used a modem that slow. ;) However, if you connect to a server that has a fire hose connection, I been amazed at what download speeds I can get over a 56k or an ADSL modem.
