OTOH, my Compaq Evo N1020v uses the ATI 340M chipset for both video and one of the bridges (southbridge/northbridge), which is unsupported in Linux. So I must use the framebuffer in Linux, which is no fun. I *should* be able to drive dual displays with this setup, but without support in X11, no way. The unit has lots of other problems, most notably the fact that the keyboard does not work at boot time if an external keyboard or docking station is attached. This makes it difficult to deal with multi-boot installations, or to access the BIOS. So, while some Compaqs may work, I would never, ever buy one, and if this one wasn't my work-provided machine, I would throw it in the garbage. -ronc

ACPI sucks on about everything under the sun right now, and there is very little anyone can do about it.
I have Compaq laptop (evo 150n) I works ok straight out of box (apart from 8.0 pro.. trident's display adapter / drivers to that sometimes caused the mouse pointer to get bit off focus..
Other grey areas I have experienced are ACPI and InfraRed, can't get it working with my Nokia phone.. even with latest Gnokii build fail to connect the phone, but I assume it's the BIOS setting that aren't flexible enough...
All in all I am still very pleased with my box and Linux on it.. (only linux on it nowadays)
