I don't know what SuSE had in mind, but I just do:
ln -s /sbin/init.d/servicename /sbin/init.d/rcx.d/S45servicename
if I want to start a service ( the number is a sequence number, take a look into the rc?.d directories, they start in ascending order )
"S" is for start, "K" is for kill
