i had a similar thing happen to me -- compositing didn't work -- i went into System Settings -> Desktop -> Desktop Effects -> Advanced and changed Compositing type from Xrender to OpenGL -- after that i can get dizzy with the spinning cube along with everyone else
It was set for OpenGL by default.....maybe I should try Xrender.
