If xv is still available for SuSE > 12.3, give that a try. (Sorry, haven't looked for it in 13.1 repos.) It can do what you want and, though it can, it won't try to save any mods. IIRC, you have to do explicit saves. Yes, it's like 20 years old but it still works good and is the only viewer that does what it does. You'd have to get several different viewers/editors to be able to do all the things xv does.
