what has worked here -- perfectly, i might add -- is simply open existing file,
But I think I wasn't clear enough. My problem is that I cannot "open existing file" in the first place, because 1. It doens't show up in the File > Open > pick-a-file dialog box, and 2. Even if I give it the file name by hand, it thinks it can't find an import filter: " koffice (lib kofficecore): KoDocument::openFile for /work/jw/Mad_Cow.doc koffice (lib kofficecore): KoFilterEntry::query( 'application/x-kword' in Export and 'application/x-doc' in Import) kio (KTrader): KServiceTypeProfile::offers( KOfficeFilter, ) kio (KTrader): No profile, using KServiceType::offers, result: 28 offers koffice (lib kofficecore): Query returned 0 offers koffice (lib kofficecore): KoDocument::openFile - importedFile kparts: 0x80c4e48 emitting activePartChanged (nil) kparts: Part::~Part 0x80ae610 " Or in the case of excel imports: 3. koffice (lib kofficecore): ERROR: Found no KOffice part able to handle application/msexcel! So where do I "get" a "KOffice part able to handle application/msexcel!" ? One would think it was included in the base rpms?

what we do not yet have, sad to say (though it's being worked on, vigorously), is *export* filters. meaning that you can write to a winword template, in a winword file you've imported, but you can't save it back to winword format. -- dep
one day, you'll wish it was now. your wish has been granted. don't waste it.
