However, when I turned on the computer this morning the only X enviroment I see is the default(which is not KDE probably only an xterm) and I see all the users on the left hand side(such as root, nobody, and all the deamons). When I type "startkde" on the xterm window KDE starts. What could have I done to get this problem?
The only possibility I can think of is that I deleted all the /tmp files .mcop files just to get KDE work without any problems..

Hello Richard and Baris, I encountered this problem as well after installation of KDE3.1 (running SuSE v8.0 Pro.). Once I finished the install I ran SuSEconfig as root and was greeted with a message saying that /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc had been modified by the user and that SuSEconfig would not touch it but would create a copy of the file called kdmrc.SuSEconfig. Renaming kdmrc.SuSEconfig to kdmrc corrected the problem. I have noticed however that changes I make in Control Center > System Administration > Login Manager (such as setting a custom background or setting 'Show Users' to None in the Users tab) are being ignored. I'm not sure if this problem is related to the original Login Screen issue or not, but I suspect it may be. Hope this helps. Jesse
