A footprint from what's wrong ought to be in /var/log/Xorg.0.log The stone wall I hit (both with the ATI rpm and the SuSE rpm) was the error: "Failed to initialize UMM driver" My brute-force bypass was to set "mtrr" to "on". I did get fglrxinfo to say "ATI ... 9600 ...", but currently an old problem of mine has resurfaced -- X thinks display :0 is already busy.
