[opensuse] 11.1 does not get to login screen on vmware 2.0

I installed 11.1 (clean install) on a vmware 2.0 virtual machine, but after going to level 5 I just get the black screen of death. If I give 3 as final level to the grub boot screen, log in as a user and do startx from the command line everything is OK. So it isn't the X server. Any ideas?
