I've had similar problems with slightly bad ram. I'd try underclocking the ram and/or the processor for a while to see if it continues. Try running memtest86 for a few hours first, though. Now that I think about it, it could also be your motherboard. There are known problems with some VIA chipsets. I had that one, too. A specific combo of VIA chipset, AMD pcnet ethernet, and Promise IDE caused lockups whenever there was a lot of IDE activity going on. This is certainly the case for crons.
