How do you think your kernel boots, given that the ide/sata/scsi drivers and the drivers for the file system you use aren't compiled into the kernel? They're loaded via the initrd and that incorporates the drivers that the install determined to be needed. I haven't tried with USB, but with any other boot media I've encountered. If the kerrnel can boot off that media, it can also load the initial ramdisk and that in turn is easiest built by using mkinitrd.
