Just want to report back to this list that I give kudos to Wolfgang, he solved this problem! Turns out I apparently had some corrupt libraries and replacing them did the trick. For future reference, in case anyone else runs into this, this was the magic solution - Good :-)

sudo zypper in -f libQt5Core5 libQt5Gui5 libQt5Widgets5 libQt5X11Extras5 Well, what I suggested in my last post was precisely to reinstall everything in the kde patterns ;-)
