I have experienced odd keyboarding problems that seemed to be solved by switching to one of the consoles and back. you might try it. <ctrl><alt><f1..6> type a few chars <ctrl><alt><f7>
if that doesn't work, try restarting plasmashell, kquitapp5 plasmashell && sleep 2 && kstart5 plasmashell & disown
I am assuming you do not have some weird keyboard setup.
I rebooted of all things and it's all ok now. It started when I added Gnome, Mate, and one or two others, so it probably got confused. However, it seems fine now.
