It's a REAL BUMMER when you get new hardware and need sound because MOST on board chipsets AREN'T supported nor are PCI cards. It's an area that is VERY much lacking in Linux.
I must say, that simply isn't my experience. Recently, I've installed 9.2 on two different Athlon64 laptops (Fujitsu Siemens and Acer), and on a VIA ITX system (VIA onboard sound). A while ago I did it on my home machine, which has a cheap PCI Soundblaster with digital out. On _all_ these machines, sound has been configured without a hitch, and works fine. Also true, incidentally, with an old machine I recently resurrected which has an ISA SoundBlaster AWE in it, but that's less relevant in these modern times ;) Just as another data point, this laptop has: 0000:00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Sound Controller (rev a0) Subsystem: Fujitsu Siemens Computer GmbH: Unknown device 105f Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B- Status: Cap+ 66Mhz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- Latency: 64 (13000ns min, 2750ns max) Interrupt: pin C routed to IRQ 169 Region 0: I/O ports at e800 Region 1: I/O ports at ec00 [size=128] Capabilities: <available only to root> Alsamixer displays: Card: SiS SI7012 Chip: Realtek ALC655 rev 0 ... and shows loads of interesting sliders.
At this point, I have no idea what to do......I've a card, a discontinued card no less, which IS on the list in Yast, but from articles I've read, isn't supported and I certainly can't get it to work.
Well, I expect that if you list your requirements, somebody on this list will be able to say "I have one which does that ... it's a _____!" -- Bill
