Speculation at this point, most of the kernels that are made by Hubert are sound, common source with the patches from Andrea and the other branches IA-64 Zseries etc). Anything for the IDE I suspect would be fom Andre Hedrick, and his code is usually sound, well he is the ATA guy :~) So, my issues with IDE drives are bad HW, not SW. Are you enabling that script? I do not use 7.3, but I do use this on SLES, which is based on 7.2.
Looks like there's been a rash of this DMA cruft going around. I wonder if SuSE's/Hubert's kernels aren't adding some IDE stuff that shouldn't be added, or if something broke in the kernel proper tree...
