[SLE] problems w/ second NIC

I have installed a second NIC in my SuSE machine. I am not able to ping anything other then the IP address assigned to the NIC. I know the NIC is good because I had been using the NIC in another machine before putting it into the the SuSE machine. I know the cables is good because I first tried the origninal cable the NIC was using, then I switch to another cable that is good. An ifconfig eth1 tells me that the broadcast/mask is set correctly. Any thoughts on other software issues I should check?
