Howdy, everyone: I thought I'd toss in my $0.02 on this topic... On Sat, 2002-02-09 at 14:52, Daniel Rees wrote:

I get this too :-( Once I do fire up RedCarpet (as root),the download speeds from a number of the mirror-sites is *very slow*.
3. Menus are messed up - e.g. gnome-games is installed, by games menu is empty.
Again, I have this too, but a bit worse. Using the System -> Settings, get the top-level label "KDE" or "SuSE", and the flyout submenus are empty. The apps which should appear under these menu-points do exist, though - from a console, I can issue "koncd" for example, or "konqueror" and they run fine.
5. If you select gdm as login manager, it fails to find any config files.
You're luckier than I was! Using GDM, my SuSE 7.2 system was hooped - GDM wouldn't accept any keypresses from my keyboard :-( Temporarily I fixed this by chaning to KDM, which worked fine. Later, I re-downloaded and re-installed GDM, and it started working. I reported this to Ximian, and they've set the status as "Not gdm", claiming they've had a few reports of this, all from SuSE users. Therefore, it's a SuSE problem. Hmm.
To be honest, I only installed Ximian for Galeon and to see how Evolution had progressed. I used to like GNOME, but it just isn't a patch on KDE now (especially looking at the KDE 3 beta).
I like the polished user-interface with Ximian Desktop. I'm staying with it, but it *does* have its warts. I haven't seen KDE 3, but I'll definitely take a look later on. -Gord -- Gordon Pritchard, P.Eng., Member IEEE Technical University of B.C. - Research Lab Engineer mailto:gordon.pritchard@techbc.ca direct phone: 604-586-6186
