Politics don't translate well on a global mail list, and however well-meant are likely to irritate or inflame somebody, somewhere which doesn't help when you're discussing a technical subject. So it's usual to keep all politics off technical lists. Sigs are often used to state what hardware and software you are running, so it is clear to others.
