You see already that via ps2pdf there is an important size reduction, more that 50%.
The printer approach is fine when you are just doing static documents for prepress. However, with this approach one looses features such as hyerlinks and hyperlined TOC, etc.
Absolutely. However, Mark's file can do without that. The problem is, I have no real idea why OOo PDF files are so large. There is the font issue, yes, and some embedded fonts are too big, but I don't know if that is all that is happening. Then there is the images included. I don't know the original DPI of those images, tuning for that size would do some improvement. Funnily, tuning for 150 DPI results in a larger file than tuning for 300 DPI. Then, instead of lossy compression at index 90, we could use 75 [...] no big difference. Funny, if I say "don't reduce resolution, don't use lossy compression", the file is smaller: from 460009 to 413919, for a 4 page document. That's the best I can get with OOo writer using "Times" font, although OOo insists on converting to "NimbusRomNo9L" instead. [...] uau. I removed the two photographs, ant using text only, Times font, the file occupies a lot: - -rw-r--r-- 1 cer users 362030 2008-06-25 02:54 4-pages-mod-tremis-nofoto.pdf name type emb sub uni object ID - ------------------------------------ ----------------- --- --- --- --------- NimbusRomNo9L-Medi Type 1 yes no yes 160 0 NimbusRomNo9L-MediItal Type 1 yes no yes 155 0 NimbusRomNo9L-Regu Type 1 yes no yes 150 0 Compared to the file with the two photos: - -rw-r--r-- 1 cer users 413919 2008-06-25 02:57 4-pages-mod-tremis.pdf name type emb sub uni object ID - ------------------------------------ ----------------- --- --- --- --------- NimbusRomNo9L-Medi Type 1 yes no yes 164 0 NimbusRomNo9L-MediItal Type 1 yes no yes 154 0 NimbusRomNo9L-Regu Type 1 yes no yes 159 0 So the big problem with OOo is the fonts. Confirmed. Now, why on earth does it insist on using NimbusRomNo9L* instead of the selected "Times"! I don't understand. :-/ I have no idea where it does that font mapping. Nowhere in the options menu. Must be hardcoded domewhere. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
