I read Richard Brown's comments and thought, "How odd that someone with his level of expertise would go off down that path", then I read the rest of the thread and came across Anton's post, which pretty much sums up my sentiments. Richard is certainly entitled to his opinion for, like noses, everyone has one and most of them smell. He just needs to keep in mind that some of us have a deep seated distrust of those "greatest things since sliced bread" that come out of software development, be it programs or OSes, which comes from years of experience dealing with the vagaries of same. I think I will continue managing my systems with the same philosophy that has served me so well for the past 30 something years.
