presumably suse remains capable of programming hotkeys for those who do not have mice. and the safe boot option turns off a lot more than acpi. i have never heard of a situation where faulty acpi made ide dma not work, for instance.
Hold on. When the system is booting up, you only have the grub/lilo menu, there is no support for checkboxes. Perhaps you should talk to grub/lilo developpers to add them! :-)
Seriously, I agree that the safeboot option is an overkill. So? What I do is _edit_ the boot up line (just press any key when the menu pops up) and add acpi=off, or delete ide=nodma from the failsafe entries. Probably deleting things from the failsafe line is easier, and I think it is mentioned on the manual.
Those lines are editable during boot, so you can try them.

What do I need to type in, in order to boot in safe mode in Windows? I am running WinXP and SuSE8.1 on the same box. -- Frits Wüthrich <frits@wuthrich.cc>
