/etc/ppp/ip-up.local
I don't have that file. Would I just create one and treat it like a shell script that'll be run when I connect?
man pppd for explanation. Yes, it is a script, you create it if you need it, and it is called automatically when your modem connects, from script ip-up.
But what for? No viruses here... yet, at least. They only check for "windows" viruses...
Oh, I wasn't aware of that. I just thought Linux viruses were RARE, not actually nonexistent.
So rare that I have never seen one. Taking the normal precaution, as not executing any thing you don't know, you are safe on that side. No Linux email program will execute any binary or script it receives, so you are safe there... after all, a virus has got to be run somehow for it to do anything.
So do I need to have a firewall running, or take any other protective steps against other forms of computer malice?
Certainly, you need the firewall running, and keep the system updated and a few other things to be aware off. This is far better explained on the SuSE manuals (paper or electronic format) than what I can write here. There are some risks (holes, trojans, etc), but virus, no, neglectable. However, if you run a server of some sort for windows machines, then certainly, you need an antivirus - to protect them! -- Saludos Carlos Robinson
