Pensamos igual! Aunque hay que ver si lo que queres es algo RAD (por ejemplo MONO) o algo bien hecho como lo que propone Carlos (PHP + JS) y C /BASH para batch. -- sf.-

En realidad el contra que tiene Java, es que es demasiado lento, para mi gusto. A lo mejor son menos lineas de código, pero sacrificando mucha velocidad. saludos sf
