Gruß, Ulrich linux.com: After aquiring SUSE 3 years ago, Novell has made very few inroads into the enterprise, mostly selling to existing Netware customers and pre aquisition SUSE users. Red Hat continues to dominate the lucrative enterprise subscriptions at around 80%. Clearly the strategy of Novell has not worked and Hovsepian has been appointed by the board to "fix the problem". Hovsepian desperately needs to increase the number of enterprise subscriptions, but customers are sticking to Red Hat. What to do? The shrewd Hovsepian realises that Microsoft biggest threat (Red Hat) is also Novell's biggest problem, as Red Hat's dominance is preventing SLES from increasing market share. So a meeting is arranged with Microsoft to determine how to deal with this common enemy. Novell says to Microsoft: "Your proxy war against Linux via SCO has failed. We have a better plan for you. Instead of funding SCO lawsuits, buy a boat load of SLES subscriptions from us and hand them out to your customers. In return we will push .net/mono in the enterprise and because we are violating your patents in mono we will pay you royalties (tax) for each sale. You can then spead FUD about how users of other commercial Linux distributions may be sued for patent infringement". "Great idea.", says Microsoft. Remember, unlike Red Hat, Novell is not committed to open source or Linux. They just use Linux as a means of selling their proprietery software. Novell would be happy to see Linux hurt if it means their stock price will increase high enough so the major holders can dump their stock and make a large profit. Remember when SCO shares skyrocketed to around $20 after the lawsuit was announced? The financial benefits to Microsoft and Novell in this arrangement may be slightly in Novell's favour. Microsoft buys the subscriptions, but gets most of the money back through the royalties. Novell gets a huge spike in the number of subscriptions and is able to claim the title of leading Linux enterprise distributor. Novell stocks go up, Red Hat down. Microsoft FUD then causes clueless CIOs then perceive Red Hat Enterprise Linux to have IP issues and decide to switch to Novell. Again, this increases Novell stock price at the expense of Red Hat. Novell and Microsoft would then hope that Red Hat eventually goes bankrupt and Novell gets all the enterprise customers. After the lifespan of the deal between Novell and Microsoft finishes, enterprises are dependant on Microsoft's IP and patents. Microsoft can then finish of Novell once and for all and provide an "upgrade" path from Novell's Linux to Microsoft products. This is what Ballmer means by interoperability. How to avoid this from happening? Boycott Novell/SUSE, support Red Hat and other companies who are strong backers of the GPL and who give back to the community. The merely emphasize the fact that this deal is a sign that GNU/Linux has been recognized as important, even as a winner, but they wouldn't make the same kind of deal Novell made themselves. That is what they state: "We will not compromise." Novell compromised. RedHat wont. And this is reason enough for me to support RedHat over Novell, especially if any lawsuit that people are starting to talk about against RH by MS happens.
My 2 cents, Claus On Sat, 2006-12-02 at 18:51 +0100, Ulrich Grün wrote:
