Hallo Liste, ein Bekannter hat sich einen alten Rechner (P 166) über eBay besorgt. Nun möchte er gerne von mir Linux darauf installiert haben. Ich habe mich für SuSE 7.1, Kernel 2.2.18 und XFree 3.3.6 entschieden. Eigentlich eine gute Mischung, die auf einem anderen System dieser Leistungsklasse einwandfrei arbeitet. Das Problem ist nun aber die Grafikkarte. Es handelt sich um die im Betreff genannte Cirrus Logic 5446 in der Onboard-Version. Die wird von 3.3.6 unterstützt, wie auch aus dem ServerLog (siehe unten) hervorgeht. Beim ersten Versuch hatte ich noch Grafikchip usw. von Hand ausgewählt, erhielt dann aber nur die Meldung "No screens found". Beim zweiten Versuch ließ ich dann alles von Sax automatisch erkennen. Er fand eine Karte mit 4 MB Speicher, tatsächlich hat sie aber nur AFAIK 2 MB. Sowohl mit 2 als auch mit 4 MB trat jedoch immer der folgende Fehler auf (jeweils bei 640*480 mit 16 Farben, also unterstes Niveau): Der X-Server startet, man sieht den blauen Hintergrund mit den vier Rechtecken in jeder Bildschirmecke, die bei der Bildkalibrierung helfen sollen. Dann verabschiedet sich der Server aber einfach und ich erhalte den netten Hinweis, mir die Dateien ServerLog und StartLog zu Gemüte zu führen. Ich kann dabei aber nichts Auffälliges finden. Ok Leute, habe es jetzt selbst hinbekommen. Mußte die XF86Config von Hand erstellen und den Link /var/X11/bin/X auf den SVGA-Server setzen. Die Modelines habe ich von xmode erstellen lassen und mit xvidtune nachbearbeitet. Ich weiß, echte Männer rechnen die selbst aus... Ich weiß aber immer noch nicht, warum Sax das nicht hinbekam. Wie auch immer, das Teil läuft jetzt wunderbar auf 1024*768 mit 16 bit, der Bekannte ist zufrieden und ich habe meine Ruhe. Ich dachte schon, ich müßte ihm den Textmode schmackhaft machen ;-) -- Gruß, Patrick

Also hier auf nem P 133 mit nem Cirrus Logic 5436 kann ich nur sagen, dass sich die Kiste nach nem Update auf XFree86 4.1/4.2 deutlich schneller anfühlte als mit allen älteren Versionen. Eventuell ist das mit XFree86 3.3.6 vielleicht gar keine so gute Idee. Der hat allerdings 128MB Hauptspeicher. Ich benutze sonst nur 3.3.6 unter Linux. Unter FreeBSD auch 4.2.1. Mit 4.2.0 habe ich unter SuSE 7.1 eher schlechte Erfahrungen. Ich mußte updaten, damit die Radeon 9000 unterstützt wird. Jetzt habe ich allerdings massive Probleme, daß einige Schriften erst nach dem dritten Strg+Alt+Backspace überhaupt angezeigt werden. Das ist nervend. Die SDB hat da schon mal wieder nicht weitergeholfen und für Google finde ich nicht die richtigen Suchbegriffe. Vielleicht muß ich deswegen auch noch mal hier nachfragen, ich versuche aber erst nochmal selbst, das gerade zu biegen. Wie gesagt, 3.3.6 läuft jetzt ganz gut. Nachdem ich nun eine gute Stunde daran herumgebastelt habe, traue ich mich auch nicht mehr, was dran zu verändern.

Die Kiste des Bekannten haben wir auch auf 128 MB EDO hochgerüstet, sonst ließe sich damit auch gar nicht vernüftig arbeiten. Bei 25 Euro für den Kasten war noch genügend Etat für den Speicher übrig. Da hat er sich allerdings wirklich eine Höllenkiste zugelegt. So einen uralten, störischen Onboard-Scheiß soll er bloß nicht mehr anschleppen :-/ -- Gruß, Patrick
