I've a Sony Vaio PCG running SuSe 8.0. It's been running a full Oracle (version 9) installation on 256mb of ram happily with a corner to corner graphics display for the past year and a half. I mention this merely to demonstrate the machine has been used for some real work. First time installation I have to use the following boot prompt: ide2=0x180,0x386 pci=conf2 to get the the CDrom drive recognised and to stop the install hanging on certain hardware probing. Now I tried to install SuSe 9.0 but have run into a problem with the RPM install. The kernel seems to be happy but once the software starts going on, various installs (basic stuff like grep, gawk, etc.) fail with a complaint about this i586 package is 'not intended for a i686 architecture' Firstly, why did this not jump up and bite me with the 8.0 installation? Secondly, how do I pass the '--ignorearch' argument to RPM? I guess I could pass it as an argument to the kernel, (to pass on to RPM later), via the boot prompt/yast2 whatever, but have failed to locate any pointers as to the correct method, (if that is the right way to go). Any help gratefully appreciated.
