problems configuring a 3COM 3C509(b) NIC
Having problems with a 3COM 3C509 NIC. (This is an old card but it's more than sufficient for my needs at the moment). I'm trying to create a simple network, viz. Win95 T ----------thinnet coax. -------- T Linux NE2000 (10BaseT) 3COM3C509 NIC The cable, terminators etc have been tested and work fine. The NE2000 card is working, I've seen it working connected in the same box, connected to another Win machine. But I'm unsure whether the 3C509 card is a) a 3C509 card (obviously, an older version) b) a 3C509b card The only identifier on the card is a printed "3C509" with a "B1" pen written. Is it possible to determine what this card is by using Donald Becker's 3c5x9setup prog ? I used the above programme to try, and was given this output (which I suggests an old 3C509) : maesd:~/3com # ./3c5x9setup -v -f 3c5x9setup.c:v0.05b 10/6/99 Donald Becker (becker@cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov) Interrupt sources are pending. Interrupt latch indication. 3c5x9 found at 0x300. Indication enable is 00fe, interrupt enable is 009c. EEPROM contents: Model number 3c509 version 1, base I/O 0x300, IRQ 10, 10baseT port. 3Com Node Address 00:60:8C:59:B3:1B (used as a unique ID only). OEM Station address 00:60:8C:59:B3:1B (used as the ethernet address). Manufacture date (MM/DD/YY) 7/14/93, division 6, product CR. Options: half duplex, enable linkbeat. The computed checksum matches the stored checksum of 8f9c. Which 3C509 card is this ? (I can only assume it matters.) According to Ethernet-HOWTO :
3c509B users should use either the supplied DOS utility to disable the plug and play support, and to set the output media to what they require. The linux driver currently does not support the Autodetect media setting, so you have to select 10Base-T or 10Base-2 or AUI. Note that to turn off PnP entirely, you should do a 3C5X9CFG /PNP:DISABLE and then follow that with a hard reset to ensure that it takes effect.
Should I be "turning off PNP entirely" ? I have the 3Com utility called 3C5X9CFG.exe. I tried running it from the command line as "3C5X9CFG /PNP:DISABLE" but it failed. It gave an error message listing accepted commands, none of which included the "/PNP:DISABLE" option/parameter. I'm quite stuck with this problem, really stuck, absolutely and utterly sticky muddy can-not-movey stuck in a rut. Comments from experienced linux network ppl welcomed. Cheers. -- Le biblioteche ci hanno dato il potere, poi il lavoro è venuto e ci ha reso liberi. Try "pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf". If your ethernet card is pnp, it will be listed there. If not, just try loading the 3c5x9 module, and ping to the other computer in your network. If this doesn't function, you will have to enable the BNC-Port by using the 3com utility. 10BaseT is configured? IRQ 10 is only fe dis card?

It is not an pnp-card. Ya select 10Base-T or 10Base-2? That what ya haffe use. Do this widh de dos-configtool. On this way I have configured dis ya card.
Should I be "turning off PNP entirely" ?
Why not? It is a isa-no pgp-card.

Check it out with dis ya tool fe dos 3C5X9CFG.exe and make your settings.

Try dis in ya /etc/conf.modules: alias eth0 3c509 Ah,....it will be ;) Gruß, Clemens -- sig_29 Mit statserial/setserial serielle Infos abfragen: $ statserial /dev/ttyS0 (Ausgabe u.a.
