Hallo, da sich auf unserem zweiten Rechner seit dem Einbau eines neuen Mainboards und einer neuen CPU Linux mit der Fehlermeldung Posix conformance testing by Unifix mtrr: v. 1.35 (19990512) ... ... general protection fault: 0000 nicht mehr starten laesst, haben wir uns nun noch einen dritten, eigentlich zur Verschrottung gedachten PC hingestellt mit irgendeinem aelteren MB und einem 150 MHz-Pentium. Nur, Linux laesst sich immer noch nicht wieder starten, auch nicht mit dem Rettungssystem. Da ich noch eine ueberzaehlige Festplatte rumliegen habe, habe ich diese nun ebenfalls eingebaut, um Linux mit der Suse 8.1 einfach neu zu installieren. Doch nichts geht. Das Booten mit der Suse-CD kommt bis "moving into tmpfs", dann passiert eine Ewigkeit nichts sichtbares mehr, und schliesslich endet der Startversuch in einer Kernelpanic. Dabei ist es egal, ob ich das Rescuesystem zu starten oder zu installieren /sowohl manuell als auch mit safe settings) versuche. APIC unterstuetzt das MB noch nicht, alles andere bezueglich Power Management ist abgestellt. Aber zum einen ist das auch nicht gerade bequem, und zum anderen interessiert mich natuerlich, warum selbst das Rettungssystem scheitert. Nein. Nach etwas googlen weiss ich nun, dass es sich um ein Soyo SY-5BT handelt. Und damit ahne ich auch, wo das Problem liegt. Das Bios unterstuetzte nur Festplatten bis 8,2 GB, und die fuer eine Neuinstallation vorgehene Platte hat gut 10 GB :-( Also habe ich diese Platte erst einmal abgeklemmt. Bloss ob es daran liegt, kann ich nicht mehr testen. Als ich den Rechner eben bootete, stiegen ploetzlich kleine, stinkende Woelkchen aus dem CDROM-Lw :-((( Es kann natuerlich Zufall sein, dass das Lw gerade jetzt seinen Geist aufgegeben hat. Aber was, wenn der Uralt-PC doch eine Macke hat? Also werde ich die Platte nun doch in den anderen Rechner einbauen, die Suse 8.1 dort neu installieren und dann etweder das home-Verzeichnis dann von der alten Platte herueberkopieren oder die neue Linux-Installation auf die alte Platte verschieben. Welche Variante es wird, haengt davon ab, ob ausser dem Brenner wieder ein CDROM-Lw rein kommt. Sonst haetten ja auch drei Platten Platz. Zu wenig ram. Leg für die installation vorher ne swap partition an, boote dann in "Manual Installation" da hast auf tty9 ne sh in der du swapon /dev/<hd_-_swap_partition> machen kannst. Eigentlich haette ich gedacht, dass 64 MB reichen sollten.

Nachdem das CDROM-Lw abgefackelt ist, verzichte ich lieber drauf, ein anderes Lw einzubauen. Vermutlich war es reiner Zufall, aber wenn das Board doch eine Macke hat, wird es mir zu teuer. Mit "Manual Installation" hatte ich es uebrigens meiner Meinung nach auch probiert, mit dem gleichen Ergebnis, dass ich gar nicht erst zu einem Eingabeprompt kam. Aber da kann ich mich auch irren.
