Software RAID -> Hardware RAID
Hallo *, derzeit betreibe ich einen Rechner mit SuSE 9.0. Das System läuft auf einem Software RAID: hda1 + hdc1 = swap (Striping durch Kernel) hda2 + hdc2 = / (RAID 1 mit Software RAID) Weitere Partitionen gibt es nicht. Da das System ist derzeit leider quälend langsam (siehe Thread "SoftRAID langsamer als mit Promise FastTrack100 TX2 - warum?"), was wohl am Intel 440BX Chipsatz des Boardes liegt. Um die Performance jetzt wieder zu steigern, würde ich gerne einen zusätzlichen Controller einsetzen. Für mich stellt ergibt sich dabei die Wahl zwischen einem 3ware Escalade 7006-2 oder einem Promise Ultra133 TX2 mit Software RAID. Für mich ergeben sich somit folgende Fragen: Welches System ist performanter? Welches System ist stabiler? Bei welchem System muss ich keine Neuinstallation durchführen? Kann man bei einem 3ware Controller auch die einzelnen Partitionen, so wie in meiner Software RAID Konfigurationen aufteilen? Werden für den Promise Controller Treiber benötigt? Viele Grüße Bastian

Um die Performance jetzt wieder zu steigern, würde ich gerne einen zusätzlichen Controller einsetzen. Für mich stellt ergibt sich dabei die Wahl zwischen einem 3ware Escalade 7006-2 oder einem Promise Ultra133 TX2 mit Software RAID.
Für mich ergeben sich somit folgende Fragen:
Welches System ist performanter? Der 3Ware ist garantiert performanter. Dort ist das RAID durch einen Controller in der Karte gesteuert. Ich selbst habe einen 7500-4 am laufen. Die Performance ist echt Klasse. Der andere Kontroller dürfte wohl wieder einer Software Controller sein. Welches System ist stabiler? Bei welchem System muss ich keine Neuinstallation durchführen? Bei dem 3Ware wirst du sicher eine Neuinst. machen müssen. Beim anderen mit Glück nihct. Musst halt alle Pfade anpassen.
Kann man bei einem 3ware Controller auch die einzelnen Partitionen, so wie in meiner Software RAID Konfigurationen aufteilen? Das glaube ich nicht. Du kannst die Platten Partitionieren, aber um das Arrray kümmert sich die Karte.
Werden für den Promise Controller Treiber benötigt? Weiß ich leider nicht.
Lieber GRuß Can P.S.: Ich empfehle 3Ware. Hatte bisher nur ärger mit anderen Controllern. Ausserdem ist der Service bei 3Ware einfach Klasse.

Ich hatte lange Zeit ein Softraid-0 über zwei Platten mit diesem Chipsatz am laufen (reiserfs). Die Performance (Block-read/write bei bonnie) verdoppelte sich gegenüber den Einzelplatten ungefähr. Das mit dem Chipsatz glaube ich daher nicht.... Gruß Harald

Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass ich RAID 0 fahre. Ich habe mal ein paar Benchmarks mit bonnie durchgeführt: http://home.snafu.de/bschern/benchmarks/bonnie.html "ES, IDE-RAID, ReiserFS" sind die Ergebnisse eines RAID 1 mit Promise Controller. "ES, SoftRAID, ReiserFS" sind die Ergebnisse mit reinem Software RAID 1 mit dem Onboardcontroller des ASUS P2B (Intel 440BX) mit drei verschiedenen BDFlush-Parametern. "ES, IDE, ReiserFS" sind die Ergebnisse ohne RAID mit dem Onboardcontroller des ASUS P2B (Intel 440BX). Die besten Ergebnisse liefert eindeutig der Promise Controller, mit weitem Abstand folgte der betrieb ohne RAID und zum Schluss Software RAID 1. Das Software RAID 1 ist eine absolute Katastrophe, wenn ich mit Samba etwas auf das Array schreibe, kann ich nicht mal mehr ein ls machen. :-( Vermutlich verhält sich das auf Rechnern mit einer schnelleren CPU anders. Ich benutze ein P2 400MHz. Wenn einer eine Idee hat, wie man das System ohne Hardwareaufwand beschleunigen kann, wäre ich sehr dankbar. Viele Grüße Bastian

[...] Das mit der gestripten Swap würde ich mir nochmal überlegen. IIRC frisst der Zeitaufwand für das Stripen den Gewinn wieder auf, es gab da vor längerer Zeit (1-2 Jahre) mal einen thread dazu, kannst ja mal im Archiv wühlen. Und ein Softraid bringt IMHO keinen Gewinn gegenüber einer schnellen Platte. Wie hoch ist denn der Durchsatz für große und für kleine Files? Sind die Platten identisch? Peter
