Sicher ein Argument, aber...
Das Argument mit den älteren Browsern läßt sich entkräften, wenn man berücksichtigt, daß nahezu alle älteren Browser das eine oder andere Sicherheitloch aufreißen können. Für alle anderen gibt es ein "ALT"-Tag, das genug Information rüberbringen sollte, daß man völlig (!) auf Grafiken verzichten könnte.
Das haut nun wirklich nicht hin. Du kannst dem Surfer nicht vorschreiben, welchen Browser er benutzen soll - vielmehr willst Du, daß deine Zielgruppe deine Seiten besucht und mußt dich deshalb auch an ihr orientieren. Gängige Logfile-Auswertungen ergeben da ungefähr folgendes Bild: - Netscape und IE sind jeweils etwa gleich stark vertreten, was u.A. daher kommt, daß zahlenmäßig weniger Netscape-Benutzer intensiver surfen als die Gelegenheitssurfer, die eher den IE benutzen. - Jeweils 30-40% der Netscape- und IE-Nutzer nutzen nicht die Browserversion ab 4.x, sondern eine ältere (3.x, 2.x). Baut man seine Seiten nicht auch für die, verzichtet man automatisch auf Reichweite. - 25-30% der Surfer benutzen weder IE noch Netscape, sondern z.B. einen Notes-Client, kfm, in andere Software integrierte Browser oder die exotischeren Teile wie arena, cello, lynx, Opera. Auch sie stellen einen signifikanten Anteil der Surfer dar. Unabhängig davon, ob die Zahlen jetzt um 5 oder 10% danebenliegen läßt sich eindeutig feststellen, daß Seiten, die Browserspezifische features einsetzen, neuere Browserversionen voraussetzen oder gar auf Plugins aufbauen, erheblich weniger Surfer erreichen als stur in HTML 3.2 geschriebene Seiten. Diese Aussage gilt nur dann nicht, wenn man eine eingeschränkte Zielgruppe hat und diese andere Präferenzen hat. Aber wer will das so genau sagen? Wer z.B. jugendliche Zielgruppen ansprechen will, sollte auch mal an die X-Terminal-Pools in den Universitäten denken, auf denen man zwar Surfen, aber nicht mal schnell ein Plugin installieren kann. Im Kulturellen Bereich gibts z.B. viele Mac-User mit sehr wenig technischem Wissen, und so weiter.
Die nächste Version des kfm (bzw. Konqueror) wird ebenfalls Unterstützung für PNG aufweisen.
Momentan ist das Maß der Dinge HTML 3.2, denn mit jeder höheren Anforderung würde man auf 1/4 bis 1/3 seiner Zielgruppe verzichten. Niemand, der auch nur halbwegs vernünftig ist, wird das wollen.
