Dafür hat man für den gesamten Bereich SW-Installation, -Update und -Upgrade was viel besseres, nämlich apt-get! Und für den Rest (zumindest Teile davon), kann man sich ohne weiteres mal webmin anschauen, wenn man mit den Konfig-Dateien noch nicht klar kommt.

Diese pauschale Aussage ist schlicht und ergreifend Unsinn! Du _musst_ das überhaupt nicht. Es gibt neben der stable ja immer noch unstable und testing (und Backports!) - und BTW hatte ich z. B. bei SuSE 8.0 auch das Gefühl, in sowas wie SID geraten zu sein.
Mein Tip : RedHat-7.3 Professional gibt's f. nur 40.- (+PuV) allerdings woanders!
Und dann drauf hoffen, dass es nächstes Quartal immer noch ne Box-Version gibt? Oder befürchten müssen, dass es mal wieder nen gcc gibt, der zum Rest der Linux-Welt inkompatibel ist? Nein danke!

Also, erstens mögen wir doch alle SuSE, sonst wären wir doch nicht hier. Die Novell-Geschichte ändert daran ja nicht sofort etwas. Zweitens muss hier einfach mal eine Lanze für eine viel zu wenig beachtete andere Distribution gebrochen werden. Ich benutze seit einigen Monaten auf einem alten Notebook Slackware, weil sich keine andere moderne Distributiion darauf mehr installieren lässt. Zuerst war das eine Notlösung, aber inzwischen kann ich nur das Beste berichten. Modern, stabil, schlank, einfach, robust. Und noch richtig Linux. Das Paketverwaltungssystem ist, na ja, einfach. Aber auch flexibel, zuverlässig und effizient. Upgrades klappen bei mir seit Monaten problemlos, auch wenn der Kernel, Systembibliotheken oder andere Basis-Komponenten ausgetauscht werden. Die Update-Skripte werden offenbar sehr gut getestet, bevor sie rausgehen. Nein, für jeden ist Slackware nicht. Aber bestimmt für manch einen, der jetzt überhaupt noch nicht daran denkt. Bei mir hat die dienstälteste (und ausgereifteste?) Distributiion der Welt jedenfalls einen festen Platz neben SuSE erobert. Und den Debian-Jüngern sei noch ins Stammbuch geschrieben, dass ich Knoppix auch gut finde, aber weder in dieser noch in der ursprünglichen Ausprägung die Installation auf dem alten Notebook gelungen ist. Slackware lässt sich dagegen wohl auch auf einem Toaster zum Laufen zu bekommen... Nun, am Ende vermisse ich apt-get gar nicht, und RPM weniger als ich je gedacht habe... (obwohl der Nutzen auch mir natürlich klar ist, ich nutze ja weiterhin auch und bevorzugt SuSE --- nur geht es eben auch ohne gar nicht unbedingt so schlecht). Mein Fazit: Slackware ist die wohl meist-unterschätzte Distribution unter den "Großen" (sofern man sie überhaupt dazu zählen will). So weit eine persönliche Meinungsäußerung von mir.
