COBOL als Quellsprache des/r Programms/e klingt durchaus sehr plausibel. Allerdings arbeite(te)n COBOL-Programme üblicherweise mit mehreren Dateien; ein Datenpool (wie ich Deine Beschreibung verstehe) ist nur über spezielle Libraries ansprechbar. Zumindest gilt das für die häufigsten COBOL-Systeme aus der DOS-Area (MS, Realia, RM, und einer_der_mir nicht_einfällt).
Sollte es sich bei dem "einer_der_mir_nicht_einfällt-Hersteller" um MicroFocus (jetzt: Merant) handeln und die fraglichen Dateien "paarweise" vorhanden sind (bla.dat und bla.idx), so handelt es sich um sog. ISAM-Dateien - eine MicroFocus-proprietäre Dateiform, die m.E. tatsächlich nur über COBOL-Programme auswertbar ist. Hinzu kommt, das diese Programme den *exakten* Aufbau der Datensätze kennen müssen.
