Wenn ich z.B. das Engagement für XFree86 betrachte, kommt mir ein solcher Betrag echt vor wie "Peanuts". b) Ein Filtering Proxy, der On-The-Fly PNG- und MNG-Graphiken in GIF konvertieren kann, könnte eine Lösung sein. In diesem Fall würden die GIF's nur vom Proxy erzeugt, also muß auch nur dieser lizensiert werden. Es wäre z.B. denkbar, so etwas für ältere Browser als Modul in Apache einzubinden - auf die Art ist dann der Browser wieder egal. Nebenbei kann man auch Anpassungen an andere Browser/Formate zukünftig auf diese Art lösen. Es wäre dann z.B. auch denkbar, PCX- oder TIF-Dateien auf dem Webserver abzulegen und je nach Bandbreite mit mehr oder weniger hoher Kompression nach JPEG oder PNG zu komprimieren - also eine aktive Anpassung des Servers an den Client. Problematisch ist hier dann nur die verbratene Rechenzeit, die sich aber durch ein Caching sicher reduzieren ließe. Das HTTP-Protokoll gäbe diese Möglichkeit IMHO jedenfalls her. Beide Ansätze lassen sich kombinieren. Allerdings wären hier evtl. auch noch nähere Verhandlungen mit Unisys zu führen, wie eine solche Lizenzierung gestaltet werden könnte.
