Noe, dd braucht immer genau so viel Platz fuer das Image (falls das Image nicht komprimiert wird) wie das Original, da ja ein Raw-Abbild erstellt und nicht auf Belegung der Partition geachtet wird.
Deswegen habe ich ja auch geschrieben "Nur, wenn... Ansonsten". War vielleicht schluderig formuliert, soll heissen mit Komprimierung reichgt u. U. deutlich weniger Speicher.
Ansonsten muesste man AFAIK die Ausgabe von dd auch in tar, gzip oder bzip2 pipen koennen, das spart dann wohl eine ganze Menge Speicher...
Was sollte eine Pipe in tar denn an Platz sparen? Tar ist ein Archiv-Programm, das macht hier wenig Sinn.

Auch komprimieren bringt im Falle von Ralfs Problem nichts, da er ja ein reiserfsck ueber das Image laufen lassen muss (was im komprimierten Zustand nicht funktionieren wird).
reiserfsck ueber das Image? Ich bin davon ausgegangen, das ueber die Platte laufen zu lassen, fuer den Fall, das etwas schief geht, hat man dann noch das komprimierte Backup, dass man zurueckkopieren kann. Auf die Art kommt man mit weniger Speicher aus... Michael.
