- 25-30% der Surfer benutzen weder IE noch Netscape, sondern z.B. einen Notes-Client, kfm, in andere Software integrierte Browser oder die exotischeren Teile wie arena, cello, lynx, Opera. Auch sie stellen einen signifikanten Anteil der Surfer dar.
Man beachte, das lynx in der Regel wesendlich weniger connections als Graphik-Browser verursachen, da lynx in der Regel keines der Bilder anzeigt (10 Bilder = 10 Anfragen). Viele Hit-Counter sind Bilder ... Aehnliches bei Frames: nicht alle werden immer geladen. Zudem kann (und muss, manchmal) lynx seinen Identity-Header faken. Also sind diese Werte je nach Messmethode (Gesamte Hits, z.B., statt z.B. Hits auf die Frameseite) entschieden zu niedrig fuer lynx. Statistik halt ...
Unabhängig davon, ob die Zahlen jetzt um 5 oder 10% danebenliegen läßt sich eindeutig feststellen, daß Seiten, die Browserspezifische features einsetzen, neuere Browserversionen voraussetzen oder gar auf Plugins aufbauen, erheblich weniger Surfer erreichen als stur in HTML 3.2 geschriebene Seiten.
Generell gilt: Willst du gelesen werden, dann nimm eine Sprache, die der Leser einfach lesen kann. Auch ohne Bilder, Frames, etc.
Wer z.B. jugendliche Zielgruppen ansprechen will, sollte auch mal an die X-Terminal-Pools in den Universitäten denken, auf denen man zwar Surfen, aber nicht mal schnell ein Plugin installieren kann.
Und die X-Terminals haben *nicht* alle Farbe! Plugin fuer Solaris 2.x? Oder AIX? Oder HP-UX? Oder Acorn? Oder Linux?
Nur Design-Freaks, die den Grafik-Overkill lieben, setzen unter diesen Umständen noch ernsthaft auf proprietäre Lösungen und Plugins.
