[opensuse-translation] End of translations for 11.3
Hello, when exactly will be translations for 11.3 finished? Tomorrow as proposed in http://www.suse.de/~coolo/opensuse_11.3/ ? What about release notes? Those which I have in SVN for Czech language does not seem to be very recent... If it is as it ever was, translation checkins are still possible. But now the tough part is convincing package maintainers to touch their packages again and include our updated translations. They probably will not touch their packages just because of updated translations, though. I'll try to submit such packages such as yast2-trans for RC2 again, hoping that coolo will still accept them. You know, that kind of response just makes me wanna quit. I'm not some novel writer that has all the time in the world to translate, I'm an employee with limited free time and a strong preference for exact sciences and localized software packages. I have made plans in order to have a certain percentage completed tonight and now you're telling me that I may always translate, it's just that my translations won't be packaged? This is #$%^*& man! Is is so hard to have a procedure that allows for a timeline to be created and respected regarding the translations? I'm not interested in the way the rest of the process works, I just want to have 2 dates: the string freeze date and the translation complete date. These should be chosen at the very beginning of a release cycle and enforced by whomever is the release owner (no idea if you have one, but you should). The difference between those dates should be at least 2 weeks (=the time between to betas), not 5 days like it was here. Yours truly pissed off, Strainu P.S. Usually it is, the process involves a lot of work, so we don't do it for peanuts though. Remember that e.g. if you want a zypper translation changed from "Foobar" to "Foobär" _all_ 11.3 users will have to update their zypper and only very few will take advantage of the fixed translation. But if we update zypper because of a problem, we usually update the translations too. I hope this helps. Problem is, we may not know ourselves (translators) if our translation "works". For example, I rarely "test" my translations ⁽¹⁾, I rely on other doing that. If they do... or if they do in time and report. (1) My installed factory system is often not current (no network when I have available time). I often find more important (to me) problems when I test factory, which I investigate and report, and thus, rarely reach the point of carefully "testing" the translation. Plus, I use the system in English, not Spanish... I translate blindly, I don't often see or use what I make. I don't know if it is the same for other translators. On the other hand, how can I test the translation for, say, webyast? I can't run all the procedures or sections there to see if all possible strings are there and are correct in context. Often errors in translations will be noticed after much time... and often the people who notice can't report in English.

Yes ;) As always, I'm as optimistic as possible. Sometimes a window gets opened and limited package checkins are possible.

Yes, that's on my agenda. It helps if you keep track of translation improvements done since last week (= after RC1 checkins). Or someone should write a script to derive this info from our SVN commits. Than I can decide which yast2-trans packages should be updated and which .po files must be added to the translation-update packages. One caveat: We cannot update translations that are part of the instsys (e.g., slideshow texts). At least, there is no cheap and easy way to do it.

Our release notes are more or less rather technical issues that we noted during testing the pre-releases such as milestones and RCs. Often there are last minute observations that I must add--thus I'm hesitant to declare them finished by now. General note: All in all the translation schedule works quite good.
