[opensuse-translation] Call for Translations
There have been several requests from community members on the mailing lists to join language teams for the languages Brazilian Portuguese, German, French, Italian, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Spanish and Traditional Chinese. We have now decided to open up the translation process completely and not put any restrictions on it. Therefore I invite you to create language teams for those eight languages mentioned above, join one of the existing teams or start a new language team for a language we currently do not support. If you're interested, please mail on the opensuse-translation mailing list which team you like to create - or join! We currently have 55 languages - and I would like to thank everybody involved with these. It's impressive to see those translations, especially for those languages where I would not directly expect that many openSUSE users! Thanks a lot! Additionally I propose to have during the installation slide show a slide with the following content: openSUSE Localization The openSUSE project is a community project and many individuals are involved in bug fixing, packaging, testing, documentation and also localization. Localization for openSUSE specific software is done by different language teams and the localization portal is reachable under http://i18n.opensuse.org/ . Each translation teams should then add a new sentence to this parargraphwith e.g. in German "Die deutsche Übersetzung wurde durchgeführt von Karl Eichwalder und Andreas Jaeger " (translated back to English: "The German translation has been done by Karl Eichwalder and Andreas Jaeger" - assuming Karl and myself did the work). What do you think about this? Should we add this slide? Should we do it differently? We're a little bit late with this announcement - sorry about that. We will try to stretch every deadline to get localized packages into 10.3 and especially Karl Eichwalder and Stephan Kulow will help you to move this forward! I think this is a great idea :-) A good motivation for voluntary translators. Their names will not be hidden somewhere in about box, but presented to everyone who installs openSUSE in given language. It would probably be too much maintenance to have individual descriptions for each language, but perhaps we could put in the package description something generic, like: "Translated by openSUSE community members" and with references to the translation mailinglist and the translation portal on the wiki, where there are also contact information for most teams. Currently there is no package description at all, only a summary. Normally you can find information about how to contact the developer in package descriptions, might be good to have something similar for the translations. How about if writing the package description became a string, for example in susetranslations.xx.po - or maybe even it's own 1 string po in /yast/ so anyone would easily find it. Then each team could write their own and it would (hopefully) always be up to date. I didn't find grave mistakes directly, but the occurence of typos and small errors was higher than for our team from what I could tell by quickly browsing through some of the SP1 translations we were offered to have integrated. Of course I might be biased and I couldn't tell if those errors were actually introduced by the translators or the "memory". What bothered me most was that I found no signs of coordination and "standardization". In the Danish team we have defined fixed translations for the most commonly used words to ensure consistency, so "Cancel" is not translated in different ways in each dialog for example. In the novell language translations I looked at, I saw no signs of such an effort - and there certainly was no respect for the standards we've defined in our team wiki-page - which would have been the smart thing to do - since the translations build upon our 10.2 translations I assume.
